Mahogany Longcase Clock - Aberdeen 1746
£1,200
Manufactured by Andrew Gray of Aberdeen the case and the clock are from the same time period. You can feel the subtle chisel marks in the mahogany door where the craftsmen have chiselled the piece of mahogany flat.
It has a Brass face with Mithra spandrels in the corners - Mithra was the Sumerian Sun God who invented the ‘sundial’ - hence the connection between Mithra and a stunning timepiece.
We often through dates about and don’t give them a second thought - but sometimes its nice to stop and put things in context. When this stunning clock was being manufactured there was a wee civil war going on around 100 miles away at Culloden. History may 279have been happening over near Inverness, but near Aberdeen a craftsmen still had to complete his work and earn a living.
The fruits of his labour are still working 279 years later - remarkable.
