Gillows Walnut Desk (1850)

£1,800.00

This is exceptional and in MINT condition.

Made from Walnut it enjoys:

  • a GILLOWS stamp on the drawer edge,

  • Gillows of Lancaster stamps on each original drawer lock.

  • Stamped original Brass Castors.

  • Original Handles

  • Serial number L37895 on the underside of the desk

The only perceptible blemish is a little sun bleaching to the back of the writing desk and shrinkage to the Right Hand drawer bottom. It looks as though it has never been used since the day it was made to order c1850.

Gillows did not stamp every piece of furniture, nor did they give everyone a serial number. Suggesting this piece was commissioned for a significant and important order.

Gillows of Lancaster was a preeminent and highly influential British furniture-making firm that operated for over two centuries (c. 1730–1903 as an independent entity). Renowned for exceptional craftsmanship, high-quality materials (especially mahogany), and innovative designs, Gillows was considered a "byword for quality" during the 18th and 19th centuries.

It is uncommon to find such a quality piece in the Scottish Highlands.
