William Douglas Macleod (1892-1963) created approximately 160 etchings, known as recorded plates, between 1913 and 1949, solidifying his reputation as a gifted etcher, alongside his work in oils, pastels, and illustrations for the British Railways. 

  • Etching Focus: While he produced many other art forms, etchings were a significant part of his career, with notable works often depicting Scottish landscapes, Spain, and North Africa.

  • Artistic Period: The 1913-1949 timeframe covers his prolific etching years, which continued even as the art market for prints declined after the 1929 crash, leading him to explore more pastels and oils.

  • Other Works: He also worked as a cartoonist for the Glasgow Evening News in the 1920s and created posters for the West Highland Line.
